And even that's kind of unfair, because it's a remake of an all-time classic, of course it's going to be decent when it sticks so close to the original. It's still the best of the sequels, though largely just by default. It's a massive break of the suspension of disbelief and really sets up a lot of the problems with Episodes 8 and 9 by wrecking the victory that happened in the original films and establishing that continuity will not matter going forward. The Empire is still around, the good guys are still rebels for some reason, the Jedi are still gone, Vader's own grandson never acknowledges the fact that he turned good despite worshipping him. That movie basically didn't happen according to TFA. The main problem with it is that it just completely fails as a sequel to Return of the Jedi. It also does a fantastic job of setting up Rey, Finn, and Kylo as likable and interesting characters and makes you want to see more of them. It nailed the look, tone and feel of Star Wars, far more than either of it's successors or arguably even the prequels did.
